  • Argus was named after the Greek Mythology God, Argus, the all-seeing with one hundred eyes. Argus observed Jupiter cheating on his wife.  Jupiter ordered Mercury to cut the head off of Argus. The Goddess Juno, seeing this, took the hundred eyes off of Argus and put them on the tail of  her peacock, where they remain today. That is why the peacock is the logo of the Krewe of Argus and is the backdrop of the Co-Captain's float in the parade.
  • In 1972 Argus, Inc. was incorporated as a carnival organization by several civic-minded Jefferson Parish business men in order to bring Mardi Gras to Jefferson Parish on Mardi Gras Day. The corporations name was changed in 1974 to Krewe Of Argus, Inc. so that there would  a clear understanding of the organization.
  • In the beginning, the Krewe honored as its Empresses such outstanding entertainment celebrities as Barbara Eden, Phyllis Diller, Shirley Jones, Loretta Swit, Connie Stevens, Diana Ladd, Cathy Lee Crosby, Shari Lewis and several Miss Americas. In 1985, Argus' male and female membership instituted a new custom of selection Kings and Queens from it's own membership Argus XXII.
  • The Krewe is now comprised of male, female and children members, and has grown from 84 for the first parade in 1974 to 600 plus for the 2005 parade. Argus now presents the most outstanding Mardi Gras Day Parade in the New Orleans metropolitan area. This is evident by the over one million family-oriented spectators that line the veterans Blvd. Route every Mardi Gras Day. Its reputation for conducting such a well organized and incident free parade has enticed many out-of-town and out-of-state high school and community college marching bands to participate in its parade.
  • Celebrities then came from many entertainment areas and included such notables as Steven Segal, Delta Burke, Pat Sajiak and others.  Last year Argus Grand Marshal was Kidd Kraddick and Krewe, a nationwide morning radio show.  Argus also honors our Armed Service Veterans and had a special float designed for our heroes.
